The Story and Content

The Blood Priestess is a 156-page graphic novel retelling of the true story of three scam artists turned sacrificial cult leaders in 1960s rural Mexico. The case of Magdalena Solís and the village she came to terrorize is a nightmarish true story, often forgotten in the sea of more popular true crime cases. A petty scam by two career criminal brothers in March 1963 ended with the ritualistic massacre and indoctrination of a remote village.

Stylized pencils, traditional inks, and eye-catching selective coloring provide a unique and haunting read. Due to the violent and sexual themes, the novel is targeted toward a mature audience. Regular readers of horror, true crime, and history should find this book especially interesting. While certain exceptions exist, the true crime genre in the comic book medium is largely underrepresented. The majority of the novel will be black and white, with blood colored throughout. However, there are sequences of delusion and madness, which will be fully colored, using surreal and psychedelic palettes.
